Introduction
When thinking about the Greek Gods you might forget about The Titans. The Titans, also known as the elder gods, ruled before the Olympians. There are a total of twelve original Titans, six gods and six goddesses. Each of the Titans were set to be the gods and goddesses of many different domains. They were the children of the goddess Gaia, known as the earth, and the god Uranus, known as the sky.
The Titans Names and What They are the Gods Of
Oceanus (God of the Great River) Oceanus was the oldest of the Titan children, and he was married to his younger sister also known as the sea goddess. He was believed to be a river that circled the earth. All fresh and salt water was believed to come from this river.
Coeus (God of Intelligence and Inquiry) He married his siter Pheobe and they had two children together. He represented one of the four pillars. He was known as the northern one. He was one of the four brothers that helped overthrow their father, Uranus, so that their youngest brother could become king.
Crius (God of Heavenly Constellations) He also represented one of the four pillars. He was known as the southern pillar. Unlike the other Titan gods, Crius was the least noble. He is best known for his children, grandchildren, and his part in the war that ended the Titans reign.
Hyperion (God of Heavenly Light) He was married to his sister Thea and had three kids, which were the sun god, moon goddess, and goddess of dawn. He was also known as one of the four pillars. Although it's unclear which one, there is speculation that represented the east pillar.
Iapetus (God of Moral Life-cycle) He was the father to Atlas. He was known to be too cunning and foolish for his own good.
Cronus (God of Destructive Time) Of the twelve Titan gods Cronus is most infamously known and not for good reasons. He was the father to the famous gods Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon. He was the Titan that killed their father, Uranus, with his sickle. He unfortunately led the Titans to their fall.
Thea (Goddess of Sight and the Shining Atmosphere) She was married to Hyperion. She was considered to be the Aether, which was the bright upper atmosphere of the sky. She was called this because of her feminine beauty. Thea was believed to light up the sky.
Rhea (Goddess of Healing and Childbirth) She is most known for deceiving her husband. Rhea was sick of Cronus eating all her children that before he could get too her sixth child, she tricked him by wrapping baby clothes around a rock. Cronus swallowed the rock instead.
Themis (Goddess of Justice and Counsel) More commonly called "The Lady Justice," Themis is represented as a blindfolded woman holding scales. She went on to then marry Zeus and have three children with him.
Mnemosyne (Goddess of Memory) She is best known for being the mother of nine Muses, who she fathered with Zeus. She is the reason you think of things and just suddenly forget them, a skill she used as a form of torment on others.
Phoebe (Goddess of Intellect) She stayed out of the Titan war and didn't receive any punishment like her siblings. She, just like some of her sisters, was given the gift of prophecy when born.
Tethys (Mother of the River Gods) Married to Oceanus; she was called the sea goddess. Despite the name, she only reigned over wells, springs, and freshwater fountains.
Titanomachy
This is a war that lasted ten years and consisted of numerous battles between the Titans and the Olympians (the younger generation of gods). This war was fought to determine what generation of gods would take over reign. This war was prophesized when Cronus killed his father. His father said that his son would do the same thing to him. Durning this war Zeus was given his thunderbolts, Poseidon was given his trident, and Haydes was given his helmet. After the new gods won Olympus, Zeus took over the skies, Poseidon the seas, and Haydes the underworld. The Titans that fought were sentenced deep underground to Tartarus, an underground prison further down then the underworld.
Final Thoughts
The Titans were a very powerful group of gods and goddess until the day they were overthrown. They stood their ground till the very last second. Although their reign over Olympus ended their impact is still well known.

This is Michael Harry - I enjoyed your blog, as the Titans were actually something that corresponded with my character, Zeus. His father and mother were Titans, and I had found out that they were the old generation of Olympus gods which I thought was very cool. It was very interesting to see the different Titans and their relationships. I would have loved to hear more about their individual stories or even the more noted ones, for example, Cronus. He became King of the Titans, that took some time to get their, what made him this way, how did it effect his siblings, etc.
ReplyDeleteI liked the organization of your blog and how you explained the purpose of each titan. I thought it was cool that together they make up all aspects of the world. The fact that the titans overthrew their father and then the gods did the same to the titans was an interesting parallel. I also found it amusing that Cronus thought swallowing his children was the best way to prevent them from wanting to overthrow him. In the end, I liked how the blog explained the war and the progression of leadership.
